Rebuild Upstate’s West Greenville Initiative gets boost from cryptocurrency community

Rebuild Upstate along with Brickyard, a local business incubator, used out-of-the box thinking in the new economy market to kelp kick start a housing renovation project.

Brickyard leadership became interested in Rebuild Upstate’s West Greenville Initiative, which is a campaign to repair 10 homes in the community, because it wanted to give back to the neighborhood that surrounds it. The Brickyard is housed in the Next Manufacturing Center on Birnie Street.

Since the Brickyard is focused on promoting tech and small business growth in Greenville, its leaders decided to focus on that community to help on the plan, said Harold Hughes, the founder of the Brickyard. That led him to Seeds, which allows people to redeem a unit of their cryptocurrency, Seeds tokens, to ask for help, and receive it as a monetary gift. He put in a request for $1,000. Rachel Cook, the CEO of Seeds, said this was the largest gift request that Seeds has met to date.

“I put in a need request with Seeds to show how cryptocurrency can make real world impacts,” said Hughes, who also is a Rebuild Upstate board member.

Chris Manley, the President and CEO of Rebuild Upstate, said the West Greenville Initiative is a $42,000 project and that $30,000 has been committed.

The West Greenville Initiative is a neighborhood-focused effort to repair homes for low-income families in the areas surrounding the Village of West Greenville. This area holds the highest concentration of families living in substandard housing, according to Rebuild Upstate’s waiting list of over 1,100 homes. To support this initiative, contact Rebuild Upstate at (864) 603-2708 or e-mail matthew@rebuildupstate.org.

“Thanks to supporters like Brickyard, we’re only $12,000 away from making a life-changing difference for ten families in the neighborhoods surrounding the Village of West Greenville,” Manley said.
