Darling Interiors Greenville: A Restoration

In the past few months, we had the opportunity to update a sweet, little house near downtown Greenville. Our main goal was this: to create a crowd-pleasing style on a modest budget, because this baby was being prepped to sell!

Out of the rooms we worked on, this kitchen was one of our favorite transformations. As you can see, not much had been touched in there since the 1960’s. What once may have been a beacon of neon yellow and golden light, was past its prime in 2017. This room needed a total redo- new cabinets, countertops, light fixtures, and new appliances, including its very first dishwasher!
Originally we were told that there was no hope of hardwoods underneath the golden blanket of linoleum, but we were pleasantly surprised to find some beautiful pine underneath! It was a long process having the wood sanded, stained, and polyurethaned, but totally worth it in the end.

Next we had to figure out how to make space for a modern-day refrigerator that no longer fit in the little nook originally designed for smaller sizes. We made room the only way we knew how…by ripping out a wall! Not only did this free up enough inches to fit a fridge, it also exposed the beautiful red brick of the chimney behind it. This brick wall became the perfect focal point for this kitchen.

Instead of a tile backsplash, we chose to install bead board. This helped with cost, but it also seemed to fit well with the rest of the textural elements involved with the room. We even convinced the contractor to cut some of the board at a diagonal to create a chevron pattern behind the range hood. Maybe don’t try that at home…

The very last step was to add some personal touches. The bar area and custom shelving were made with reclaimed wood that came from another project site we were working on. Even more than being economical, this design choice made the kitchen feel warm and inviting.
