The Abernathy: A Clemson Getaway

Summer is in full swing, and for many that means putting the finishing touches on plans for their freshman year in college.

For those families who are preparing to drop their loved one(s) off at Clemson this fall, or anyone who plans to visit the vibrant college town, look no further than a stylish spot central to it all: The Abernathy. Make those reservations now.

The Abernathy is Clemson’s new premier boutique hotel, featuring an unbeatable location within walking distance of Memorial Stadium. The modern 41-room hotel is a welcome addition to the Clemson landscape, and our pick for the place to stay. Throughout the hotel is a common thread: honoring one of Clemson’s most distinguished citizens and visionaries, the late Larry Abernathy.

A Brief History Lesson

Named for Larry Abernathy (1947-2012), the city’s longtime mayor, the hotel is more than just a place to stay. It’s a place to experience. Abernathy was also an adjunct professor at Clemson, and, interestingly, was first elected to the Clemson City Council while still a student at the university.

The Lay of the Land
The grounds of the hotel are well manicured, and the location is ideal for any purpose. An added plus? A stay at the hotel includes the ability to tailgate in the parking lot (something strongly encouraged) on gameday. And considering it’s just steps away from the stadium of the award-winning football team, snagging a room with coveted tailgate space had our wheels spinning over which games we want to see.

Guests at The Abernathy receive interesting keys: circular discs that pay homage to Dabo Swinney’s “All In” catch phrase. Artwork around the interiors gives a nod to the university’s past, a veritable walk down memory lane. There’s a fun bar area in the lobby, and it was no surprise people were enjoying it. Toasting to Clemson and its traditions? Cheers, y’all.

The Rooms Near the Rock
The most interesting part of our glimpse into the hotel was the design of the rooms. Dark stained hardwood floors set the scene for a mid-century modern meets West Elm feel. Attention to detail is a strength of the interior design. Nail head trim, furniture with clean lines, and Gilchrist & Soames toiletries are just a few of the things that caught our eye. Large TV’s and sizeable entertaining area make each room feel more like a small apartment than a hotel.

Is there a more perfect spot to tailgate within view of of Memorial Stadium?  Probably not.  In a few short weeks football fans from all over the country will begin to make room reservations that come with a convenient place to park and play before, during and after the game.  We love the fact that it is “highly encouraged” by the Abernathy management team!  Having gone to quite a few games over the years we love the idea of a leisurely drive down the night before a big game and having a few cocktails downstairs before settling in to a good night’s sleep.  Oh, and also being able to sleep in for a few hours before venturing outside to see the frustrated drivers who have been stuck in traffic all morning.

In His Own Words
Don’t just take our word for it. Swinney himself endorses the hotel. “This place is special. Genuinely welcoming. A true sense of belonging,” he says. And after our insider insight to the place, we’d couldn’t agree more.
